St. Patrick Center grew out of a simple question from Edith Cunnane, a social worker, who asked a group of people why they were outside on a cold, winter day. Their response: We’ve got nowhere to go. In partnership with the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Catholic Charities of St. Louis and Monsignor Robert Slattery, Edith founded St. Patrick Center and served as its executive director for ten years.
Under Edith’s direction, St. Patrick Center opened the original McMurphy’s Grill, the nation’s first restaurant for training clients struggling with homelessness and mental illness. Because of its success, the training program expanded its reach into the downtown community by opening McMurphy’s Express. McMurphy’s Grill operated for 22 years before closing to make way for the enhanced and renamed McMurphy’s Café at St. Patrick Center headquarters at 800 North Tucker Boulevard in downtown St. Louis.
McMurphy’s Café at St. Patrick Center offers delicious, house-made lunch featuring fresh, seasonal produce and locally sourced items. In addition to McMurphy’s Café, the training program includes the off-site McMurphy’s Café Express at 15th and Market Streets and an expanded catering menu and private meeting room space. The menu at both locations features fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables, grown locally. Some of our produce comes straight from City Seeds Urban Farm, staffed by our clients in a partnership with Gateway Greening. Eat well. Do good.
At St. Patrick Center, we’re one of Missouri’s largest providers of housing, employment and health opportunities for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. We take an action-based approach to service and offer nationally recognized programs that assist more than 8,000 people each year. Our mission, at its core, is to help individuals and families move from homelessness to independence in dignified, cost-effective and permanent ways. This approach transforms our clients as well as our entire community.
